KitchenAid KP26M1XER Introduction

It may surprise some to learn that domestic electric food mixers were introduced over 100 years ago. The first barns to market them was KitchenAid. Over the many years that KitchenAid have been making mixers they have always been renown for producing good quality products.

The KitchenAid KP26M1XER Professional 600 Series is yet another fine example in that long line. One of the more powerful stand mixers in the range, the KitchenAid KP26M1XER is powered by a 575 watt motor. For some reason KitchenAid like to equate the power and capacity of their stand mixers by the quantity of cookie dough it can produce at one time. The 6 quart capacity mixing bowl, combined with the power available mean that the KitchenAid KP26M1XER can make sufficient dough for 13 dozen cookies in one mix – that’s 156 cookies.

The KitchenAid KP26M1XER has a power take off port it the front of the head to enable the 525 watt motor’s power to be used on other optional attachments to make the KitchenAid KP26M1XER a highly flexible kitchen appliance. The attachments available include a rotary shredder and slicer, a meat grinder, pasta attachments and a spice mill. There is also an optional ice cream maker.

The KitchenAid KP26M1XER is, unlike most stand mixers, not a tilt head mixer. Instead there are two prongs that lift the bowl to the mixer. The amount of lift is adjustable to ensure that the mixing attachment is at the ideal distance from the base of the mixing bowl to ensure even better mixing of ingredients. KitchenAid say that the KitchenAid KP26M1XER is available in over 10 colors, while that is correct, what they should mention is that it is actually available in over 20 colors. So there should be a color scheme available that will suit your kitchen perfectly.

Our KitchenAid KP26M1XER Review

Physically the KitchenAid KP26M1XER measures 15 inches x 11 inches x 17 inches and weighs 30 lbs. it is reasonably heavy when looked at initially but this is actually a powerful mixer with a large motor and a 6 quart capacity mixing bowl. The weight also helps add stability when mixing large quantities of things like dough that have a tendency to amalgamate in to one lump and can cause vibration and ‘walking’ in lighter stand mixers.

The KitchenAid KP26M1XER comes complete with a spiral dough hook, a flat beater and a wire whisk. It also comes with a pouring shield, which is a really useful because that simple piece of plastic is a great help when adding ingredients when the mixer is operating. It saves puffs of flour and splashes. Many stand mixers are of the tilt head variety, the KitchenAid KP26M1XER is not. What happens is that there are two pins attached to the mixer. These pins hook in to holes in the mixing bowl and lift it, via a lever, up to the mixing attachment. There are several advantages to this method.

Firstly, due to the weight of the head, to tilt the head would require a great deal of effort. Secondly, as the KitchenAid KP26M1XER is capable of mixing larger quantities, having a fixed head adds to the stability and thirdly, the height of the bowl in relation to the mixing attachment is adjustable. This allows the optimum clearance between the base of the bowl and the mixing attachment to ensure that the ingredients are fully incorporated in to the mix.

One area where KitchenAid mixers score highly is in their planetary mixing action. What happens is that the mixing head rotates one way and the mixing head rotates in the opposite direction. The effect of this is that for every rotation of the mixing head there are 67 points of contact with the mixing bowl. This means that all the ingredients are thoroughly mixed. There is no need to keep stopping throughout the mixing process to scrape the sides of the bowl. Early mixers were just three speed. Each speed was identified by what that speed did, i.e. the whisk speed would be the highest speed.

The KitchenAid KP26M1XER has 10 speeds all electronically controlled. From a very slow stirring speed, useful when adding dry ingredients to a batter mix for example fight up to speed 10 which is ideal for whisking egg whites. The people at KitchenAid obviously don’t go along with the Henry Ford ethos of ‘Any color as long as it’s black’. The KitchenAid KP26M1XER is available in over 20 different colors – including black. So no matter what color scheme your kitchen may be there will be a KitchenAid KP26M1XER to match.

The early models of the KitchenAid KP26M1XER had a problem with the plastic housing that held the metal gears. This problem was rectified back in 2006 and all KitchenAid KP26M1XER made since then have the stronger metal gearbox casing. KitchenAid offer their 1 year ‘Hassle Free’ replacement warranty on the KitchenAid KP26M1XER.
