KitchenAid KP26M1PSL Introduction

Power packed and professional design, the KP26M1PSL from KitchenAid is a 6-Quart Stand Mixer that boasts of all-steel gear transmission on a direct drive motor for unyielding results each time. The 6-quart capacity translates to roughly 8 pounds of mashed potatoes or nearly 14 cups of flour mixing. A unique addition to KitchenAid line of stand mixers is the Soft Start feature that basically reduces initially splatter and puffing by gradually accelerating to the desired speed instead of jerking to a start. Plus, the motor is overload resistant as it shuts-down if an eminent overload is sensed.

With this stand mixer you receive a wire whip, a flat beater, one pouring shield, a spiral dough hook, an instruction booklet and a 6-quart mixing bowl that has a contoured handle. All the attachments packaged with this stand mixer are easy to install and remove thanks to the hinged attachment hub cover. Naturally, cleaning the entire unit becomes simpler just by dismantling the entire unit down to its bare basics. Even the motor head is designed as a singular seamless component making it easy to clean.

Our KitchenAid KP26M1PSL Review

From the onset, we would like to clarify that the KitchenAid KP26M1PSL is a relatively newer model number that borrows from its predecessor only the design. Construction and performance overhauls are included in the new model numbers as of January 2014, so please disregard any reviews you read elsewhere that are dated prior to January 2014. Having cleared this confusion, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of things.

Construction is a big plus on the KitchenAid KP26M1PSL. This stand mixer now comes fitted with a metal gear box and full metal gears. Plastic gears are thing of the past and kudos to KA for switching them out. Unfortunately, this does result in more noise compared to other stand mixers of a similar capacity. Metal gears make contact noise but it isn’t something you cannot adjust with. Just don’t start using your stand mixer every day early morning until you have had your cup of coffee first! Speaking of sound and durability, the instructions mention never to knead dough at speeds above 2, which we presume is because the motor produces maximum torque at speed setting 2. Most users, tend to overlook the instruction booklet believing themselves to be amazing bakers and end up down rating this stand mixer. We know because we have this particular model since March 2014 and have seen so-called know-it-alls leave uneducated reviews all over the internet. Lessons to learn here is “Always heed warnings and instructions given in the user guide for any new kitchen appliance!”

The mixer head does not come down into the bowl on this model, rather you raise the bowl up towards the mixing attachment. This needs a little trial and error to perfect. You don’t want to raise it too much and risk the attachments scraping the bowl and neither do you want it too low that the bottom amasses unmixed residue. There is that perfect adjustment point, where everything works out just fine – you only have to play around a bit to find it. This begs the question, why such a design in the first place? Just take a look at the beater attachment on the KP26M1PSL – they are much larger than competing brands and because of the size or rather the width, a tilting head is not possible as the beater attachments would hit the sides. Granted this is a pain getting used to but, once you adjust the work bowl, you hardly even notice the difference. By now you probably have understood that this mixer is large and heavy. Yes, storage is difficult and you will be leaving it out on the countertop. However, considering its ruggedness and reliability, plus its classic metallic design, it won’t be a bad idea to let it decorate your kitchen space.

KitchenAid KP26M1PSL Specifications & Pros/Cons

Pros

Cons

Key Features

  • All Metal Body – The gears are full metal and cased in a metal gear box, which translates to better life and durability.
  • Construction Overhauls – This particular model is actually older than a decade with many improvements taking place over time. Because of all the reviews KitchenAid received for this model, today the construction is flawless in all respects.
  • Power & Speed – While the unit can operate at speeds ranging from 1 to 10, the necessity to reach higher speeds is negated by just how powerful it is. Kneading comes out best when done at lower speeds.
  • Adjustable Positions – The 6 quart mixing bowl has to be raised into position to begin the mixing process. Because of this you get the opportunity to raise and lower the bowl as you mix through your ingredients, assuring a better consistency and less residue. Plus, whisking becomes that much easier.
  • Detailed Instructions – Just remember to read through the instruction booklet and you will be fine for years to come. It not only tells you how to operate the stand mixer and what all things you can do with the attachments but also how you can ensure its long and healthy life.
  • Raising the bowl and lowering it does feel unnatural at first and takes some getting used to.
  • Sometimes if you are not careful, you can actually leave unmixed residue at the bottom because you did not raise the bowl high enough.
  • Speeds above 5 are actually unnecessary considering the torque reduces as you increase the speed and mixing needs more torque than speed.
  • Warranty is for just 1-year. When you know your product is sought after and well received in the market, why do you give just a single year limited warranty? Never really understood KitchenAid tactics here.
  • Powerful Transmission – The motor is rated at 575 watts and with all-metal gears the stand mixer can operate at 10 different speeds, gradually progressing to higher gears.
  • Overload Protection – Sensors detect eminent overload and shut-off the motor automatically.
  • Soft Start – An electronic speed sensor detects operation speeds and allows for a soft start that reduces the chances of spillage and splatters.
  • Included Accessories – Among the accessories you get a spiral dough hook, a pouring shield, a burnished flat beater and a wire whip.
  • Weight and Dimensions – The KP26M1PSL measures approximately 16.5 by 11.3 by 14.6 inches and weighs nearly 29 pounds dry.
  • Unique Work Bowl Design – The work bowl stays raised above the stand mixer’s flat base held in place by two locking arms, when it is in operation. Plus, the work bowl has its own side handle allowing for easier handling.
  • Eco-friendly – All the packaging for this KitchenAid stand mixer is recyclable and easy to open too.

Our Final Conclusion For The KitchenAid KP26M1PSL

A stand mixer that has stood the test of times, evolving over the years into the perfect mixing machine. The KitchenAid KP26M1PSL is a masterclass in mixing, capable of handling nearly 14 cups of flour at once without spilling or puffing anything at all. Granted, it is a bit weird by design considering how the work bowl needs to be raised up towards the attachments, but with time you get past all the weirdness and come to appreciate its raw performance and rugged functionality. KP26M1PSL is what stand mixer evolution looks like – Classic by design, modern by performance.
