Cuisinart SM-55BC Introduction

As domestic stand mixers have developed, manufacturers are constantly striving for ways to make their mixer stand out from the rest of the competition with various add on attachments and control electronics.  The Cuisinart SM-55BC 5-1/2-Quart 12-Speed Stand Mixer, Brushed Chrome is a serious mixer that is that makes it highly adaptable to take may different attachments that fit on to the 3 different power take off ports. This gives the Cuisinart SM-55BC a high degree of versatility and allows the very powerful 800 watt motor to be used in a variety of ways with a wide variety of add on attachments.

It is not just in the attachments that can be added that improvements have been made it is also in the control technology. If the speed on the Cuisinart SM-55BC is set to the maximum, speed 12, when the mixer is turned on it will start at the slowest speed and automatically step up the speed levels until it reaches speed 12. This avoids any mixture, such as dry flour, getting thrown out of the bowl before it starts to incorporate in to the other ingredients. This means that when starting you do not have to stand there and keep increasing the speed until you reach the one that you have set. Another area where technology helps is with the countdown timer.

If your ingredients need a longer time mixing, the timer can be set for up to 15 minutes. When the mixer is started the timer will count down from the time that you have set then switch itself off when that time is reached. This saves a great deal of time as you are able to continue with other tasks without having to worry about the mixer. The set time can also has an override option so you can manually stop it early if you want.

Our Cuisinart SM-55BC Review

The Cuisinart SM-55BC measures 15.5 x 10 x 12.5 inches and weighs a little over 22 lbs. The specification states that it is die cast metal, although much of the body parts of the Cuisinart SM-55BC are plastic. In some ways this is good as it save adding to the 22 lbs. weight of the mixer. Too much more weight and the Cuisinart SM-55BC may become a bit awkward to move about. However, some users are a little disappointed with the amount of plastic that there is.

Included with the mixer are a stainless steel whisk, a dough hook and a beater. Both the dough hook and the beater are specially coated to make them easy to remove any mixture that is on them. The 5 ½ quart bowl has been designed and shaped to maximize the efficiency of the mixing and it, like the dough hook and the beater, are safe for washing in the dish washer after use.

Although the bowl does take up a lot of room in the dish washer it is often easier and quicker to hand wash. Also included is a very handy splash guard that covers the bowl completely so there is a minimal chance of any of the mix splashing out. Also incorporated in to the splash guard to make adding additional ingredients easier while mixing is a pouring spout. The most important feature on any stand mixer is how well does it mix?

As expected with the 800 watt motor, even the heaviest ingredients cause no problems and the motor does not sound as if it is under any strain at all. When whisking, being able to switch the Cuisinart SM-55BC up to the maximum speed and press start and allow the Cuisinart SM-55BC to step up the speeds is a particularly useful feature which saves needing to attend to the mixer to keep increasing the speed manually as the mixture thickens.

In addition to the 12 mixing speeds there is also a fold setting that makes sure that the Cuisinart SM-55BC allows ingredients to folded in to a mixture without over mixing and losing all the air that has been incorporated, this allow even the most novice baker to make the lightest cakes and mixtures. Sometimes ingredients need a longer mixing time. To assist with this the Cuisinart SM-55BC has a timer which can be set for up to 15 minutes. When the preset time is finished the mixer will turn itself off.

In addition the Cuisinart SM-55BC has 3 power take off points for attaching accessories. There are two on the top, under the plastic top cover, 1 which is high speed for use with blender and food processing attachments and 1 which is medium speed for when you are using attachments such as juicers. The front power outlet is for attaching a larger meat grinder or pasta maker.

All the attachments are sold separately. Whatever speed setting and no matter how thick the mixture was, the balance and the weight of the Cuisinart SM-55BC meat that it remained stable, no wandering around the work surface.
