Cuisinart PSC-350 Summary

4.5 out of 5

The Cuisinart PSC-350 is a smaller and more portable model of the industry leading Cuisinart MSC-600. As such, it’s much more affordable too. As you can expect from Cuisinart, you still get all of the pleasing gadgets and technology – such as an LCD programmable display and real time temperature information.

Cuisinart PSC-350 Introduction

With the resurgence of the popularity of slow cooking, many of the newer available models tend to be aimed at larger families with a capacity of the 5 to 6 quart range. Cuisinart offer one of the few smaller slow cookers available. The Cuisinart PSC-350 with its 3 ½ quart sized cooking capacity is ideal for a small family or even just cooking a meal for one. Even though the size (and the price) have been made smaller, the features that the Cuisinart PSC-350 is equipped with is similar to many of the full sized slow cookers.

Many slow cookers today proclaim that they are programmable, the Cuisinart PSC-350 included. This slightly misleads some buyers into thinking that a start time and stop time can be programmed in. This is not actually the case. Although this is relatively simple for the manufacturers to achieve, many do not for food safety reason. It is potentially dangerous for food to be left out at room temperature for extended periods of time. How the Cuisinart PSC-350 overcomes that hurdle is to start the cooking straight away and then when the cooking is done, according to the time that you set, the cooker switches over to warming mode automatically. What this does is keep the food hot without over cooking it.

The timer will cook from 1 minute up to 24 hours. When the time has counted down the Cuisinart PSC-350 will automatically switch over to the keep warm setting for up to 8 hours before it will turn itself off.

The Cuisinart PSC-350 still has the traditional style ceramic cooking pot and a glass lid, both of which are dish washer safe. The brushed finish stainless steel main body of the cooker and the plastic stay cool handles are cleaned by wiping with a damp cloth and drying.

Our Cuisinart PSC-350 Review

The Cuisinart PSC-350 is a well-designed smaller slow cooker. The actual dimensions of 14.2 x 16.5 x 11.8 inches are only a little bigger than the cooking pot itself. Without food the Cuisinart PSC-350 weighs a modest 9 ½ lbs. With a modern stainless steel finish and a black trim the Cuisinart PSC-350 will fit comfortably with any kitchen décor.  The compact size will fit easily on most kitchen counters without taking up too much space, however, it is light enough to lift in and out of a cupboard if necessary.

This slow cooker is advertised as having ‘stay cool’ handles. It should be emphasized that this refers to the carrying handles on the cooker and not the handles on the cook pot which will become as hot as the food it is cooking. When the meal is over and the pot has cooled down, both the pot and the glass lid will clean in the dishwasher.  One area where the Cuisinart PSC-350 scores very highly is the fact that is has a ‘simmer’ setting, many other slow cookers just have a high and low setting. The simmer setting is often praised very highly in review, which makes one wonder why more cookers do not have one. Cuisinart give very involved instructions as to how use the cooker.

An abridged version of what they say is, place the contents in the cooking bowl, switch on, set the cooking time and select the cooking mode – either high, low or simmer, and that is it. When the timer reaches zero, the cooker will switch over to the ‘keep warm’ mode for 8 hours. Simple and straightforward. The timer, which allows cooking of up to 24 hours is something that many slow cookers do not have, then there is an additional keep warm time of 8 hours. For many people this long time is unnecessary but for some people who, for whatever reason, cannot cook on certain days, this is a perfect way to have a hot meal on those days, as all that needs to be done is to serve the meal.

Although this slow cooker is perfect for small families or individuals, in some households sometimes a person has to have a different diet to others in the family. To help with this, the Cuisinart PSC-350 can also make an ideal second slow cooker to cook for that person or as an ‘overflow’ cooker when the main one is not big enough for all the ingredients. It should be noted that modern slow cookers, including the Cuisinart PSC-350, cook at higher temperatures than older models and that what is classed a low on a modern cooker is the equivalent of high on older models.

The simmer temperature on the Cuisinart PSC-350 is similar to the low setting on older models. The Cuisinart PSC-350 comes with suggested cooking times and temperature settings, but it may be worthwhile investing in an updated newer version if you have a preferred cook book for your slow cooker. Cuisinart are confident enough in the quality of the PSC-350 that they offer a 3 year limited warranty.

Key Features

  • Due to its small size and portability, the Cuisinart PSC-350 makes an excellent choice for a “second” slow cooker in the family home.
  • High, low and simmer cooking temperatures – not many slow cookers offer the simmer option, from feedback it appears to be a very popular setting to have.
  • 3 year limited warranty from Cuisinart
  • The small size can be off putting for many families, especially where you use a slow cooker to cook batches of food for 4 or more persons.
  • 24 hour timer – this is a particularly useful length of time for some people. Although the vast majority of cooking will be done in less time it is useful that the option is there if needed

Our Final Conclusion For The Cuisinart PSC-350

The Cuisinart PSC-350 is a very fine example of a smaller sized slow cooker that still retains all the features (and in some cases more features) than many larger and more expensive slow cookers. With many other slow cooker manufacturers promoting the large capacity of the cookers, Cuisinart, with the PSC-350have turned that around to make the compact size and smaller 3 ½ quart capacity a real positive for smaller families of single people.

The three cooking heat settings of high, low and simmer are very popular with users, as is the timer that is capable of cooking for up to 24 hours before it automatically switches to the warming mode for up to another 8 hours. The overall compact size and the light weight of the cooker make it an ideal option for the smaller kitchen where space may be at a premium. The Cuisinart PSC-350 comes complete with its own cook book with examples of how to make the most of all the available functions of the slow cooker.

Cuisinart are confident in the quality of the PSC-350 that they are happy to give it a 3 year limited warranty. Consumers highly rate the Cuisinart PSC-350 with a feedback rating of 4.3 out of 5 from over 600 users.
