Zojirushi NS-WAC10-WD Introduction

Cute and cuddly, two words you would not normally associate with a kitchen appliance. But the Zojirushi NS-WAC10-WD is both cute and cuddly with its dimpled faced yet petite pearl white appearance. The outer body is made from a dent resistant form of plastic that operates on Fuzzy logic technology thanks to a micro-computerized circuit within. It makes all the calculations intuitively, cooking the perfect rice each and every time. No need to precisely set the time and temperature anymore, because this rice cooker can sense it all and make the perfect adjustments.

It comes packed with a large and easy to read LCD display plus big buttons that you simply cannot miss. Some in-built features include a timer and clock functionality and keep-warm. The inner cooking pan is thick and painted black while the heating mechanism is designed to heat the pan evenly in all directions. The heaters are arranged across the sides, lid and bottom thus maintaining temperature all around. This rice cooker comes with a detachable cord and multiple accessories such as a rinse-free measuring cup, spatula holder with spatula and a regular rice measuring cup. We believe the Zojirushi NS-WAC10-WD is the perfect rice cooker for a couples only kitchen with just 5.5 cup capacity but plenty of menu settings to make delicious and soft rice.

Our Zojirushi NS-WAC10-WD Review

Zojirushi is the undisputed king among rice cookers. There is hardly any other brand that even comes close to the performance put out by Zojirushi rice cookers. Having said this, the NS-WAC10-WD is actually an improvement over older generations in that it features 360-degree heating with heating elements packed not just into the bottom but also the sides and even the top lid. The end result is better heating and excellent consistency of rice, no matter the type you plan on making. Besides, with preset functions for porridge, brown rice and even sushi, the cooker does all the thinking. Just stick to the measurement cup that comes with this cooker and add water as mentioned in the instruction booklet, you simply cannot go wrong.

Now, coming to the construction, yes this Zojirushi is not made in Japan, instead is the result of Chinese manufacturing, but that does not necessarily mean poor quality. The outside material is some sort of plastic that does not dent easily and it seems the plastic is designed to handle heat well. In our three months of regular testing, we did not feel the plastic bending to heat or denting when and if hit. As for the LCD panel, it is clear and easy to read though you have to bend down a bit to do so because of the angle at which the screen sits, but this is a common problem with most rice cookers. The buttons thankfully are large and color coded so you don’t accidentally press the wrong ones. Plus, with a detailed instruction booklet (recipe guide), operating this machine is actually a breeze.

How does rice come out as opposed to typical run-of-the-mill rice cookers available in discount shops? Well for starters because it is a 360-degree heating rice cooker, expect it to take longer. Unlike bottom heating that cooks rice quick but unevenly, this rice cooker does it over a longer period of time with greater overall consistency. So, for brown rice we recorded an average of about 1 hour and 35 minutes while for white rice it was about 40 to 45 minutes. Not bad considering the fact that you can actually pre-program the unit, soak the rice in the cooker and leave it to cook on its own once the delay timer counts down to zero. Plus, there is an extended keep warm functionality so just in case you are getting late, the cooker delays the warming process further to ensure temperatures stay optimal until you are ready to eat.

Zojirushi NS-WAC10-WD Specifications & Pros/Cons

Key Features

  • Cooks Just 1 Cup – Most rice cookers falter when trying to cook less than 2-cups of rice. This rice cooker however does a perfect job even with just one cup of rice. Make sure to add the right amount of water though, which is usually slightly less than you are used to.
  • High Consistency – Slow and steady wins the race. In this case it makes the perfect rice each and every time. Yup, the Zojirushi WAC10-WD takes nearly twice the time a cheap cooker needs but it gives amazing consistency every single time.
  • Cook More Than Just White Rice – Make porridge, sushi rice, brown rice and just about any kind of rice you can find in the market. There are settings and configurations for various types of rice and quantity. A little experimentation can let you do more than rice cooking too such as oats, chilies and soups.
  • Fuzzy Logic Rocks – The fuzzy logic concept is basically a big brain in a tiny chip inside the rice cooker that does all the thinking for you. All you have to do is select an option, the cooker does the calculations depending on the rice and water quantity inside.
  • Easy to Clean – The insert wipes off easy and the lid comes off. In other words, cleaning this rice cooker is quick and easy.
  • Takes a lot of time to cook rice so you have to plan earlier than usual. Our advice is to set a delay timer and let it do the rest before you leave for office in the morning.
  • Has a slight learning curve if you plan on doing anything other than the preset options such as Thai Rice and so on. But a little experimentation should fix that.
  • It is heavy even though it is tiny, try to keep it at one place on your kitchen counter at all times.
  • White does catch dust and spots. Being plastic on the outside, it can lose the luster over time.
  • Fuzzy Logic Cooking – With Micom Fuzzy Logic technology, you can set and forget this rice cooker. Any minor adjustments in terms of temperature or time is done automatically by the cooker on top of your specific instructions.
  • Keep Warm – Once the cooker is done, it switches off the heating elements but periodically warms up the insert to ensure rice stays just warm enough to retain the flavors and aroma.
  • Large Menu Options – Make brown rice, sweet rice, sushi, porridge, white or mixed rice and even quick cook if you run out of time.
  • Detailed Instructions – The instruction booklet is thick and covers all commonly spoken languages including South-East Asian languages, the cooker is after all Japanese.
  • All Accessories Included – Comes with measuring cup, detachable power cord for easy storage and spatula with its own holder.
  • Large LCD Panel – Setting and operating this rice cooker is simple with large laminated buttons plus a big LCD display screen that is bright and visible with ease.

Our Final Conclusion For The Zojirushi NS-WAC10-WD

No rice cooker is perfect enough to always give you nice evenly cooked rice each and every time. Thankfully, the Zojirushi NS-WAC10-WD comes pretty close with its Fuzzy Logic Micom technology. Loads of preset options, ability to cook 1-cup rice makes it an ideal choice for bachelors and couples alike. Besides, filling to full capacity doesn’t seem to affect the performance either so throw parties too when you feel like it and make rice the main attraction.
