Zojirushi NS-VGC05 Introduction

As rice is becoming a much more popular part of our everyday diet the demand for dedicated rice cookers is growing. This is because cooking rice can sometimes be a little hit and miss. One moment it is a little under cooked and hard, then a few seconds later it seems to be over cooked and soft and a little mushy. Plus with modern rice cookers they can be preprogrammed to cook the rice at a specified time.

Modern rice cookers, like the Zojirushi NS-VGC05, have the ability to be able to cook rice perfectly every time. This does not just apply to standard white rice, there are often a selection of programs that will cook an assortments of rice. They do it by using a combination of a precisely measured water to rice ratio and then using and exact heat and cooking time for the quantity of rice. Electronic controls allow delayed start and set times for the rice to be cooked. When the rice has been cooked, there is often a ‘keep warm’ mode that will keep the rice hot to eat without over cooking it. Most rice cookers will cope with reasonably large quantities of rice, often cooking up to 12 cups of cooked rice.

A problem with them is that they cannot small amounts. The Zojirushi NS-VGC05 is a smaller rice cooker that will cook from as little as ½ cup of uncooked rice up to 3 cups. Making it ideal for anything from a single serving up to enough for a small family. Another advantage of the smaller capacity rice cookers is that they also take up much less room in a crowded kitchen when compared to the larger cookers. With a rice cooker and the timing benefits that it offers with timed cooking of the rice is a feature that potatoes and pasta cannot compete with.

Our Zojirushi NS-VGC05 Review

The Zojirushi NS-VGC05 is a smaller compact rice cooker, measuring only 8.8 inches x 10.9 inches x 7.9 inches and weighing just under 5 lbs. empty. This means that even the smallest most congested kitchen should be able to find space to fit the Zojirushi NS-VGC05. The power cord is detachable and can be stored in the rice cooker’s cooking pot when not in use. The Zojirushi NS-VGC05 manages to cook the rice perfectly every time by using ‘fuzzy logic’. It achieves by claiming to weigh the rice and water at the same time, and then monitoring the cooking temperature as the cooking process goes on by. It then calculates the cooking time on-the-fly to simultaneously cook rice consistently to perfection.

When you first start to use the Zojirushi NS-VGC05 and watch the cooking time you may notice that it often alters the time remaining. This is not a fault with the timer it is the Zojirushi NS-VGC05 constantly updating the time remaining based on the temperature at that time. Should the rice be cooked before the time that you wanted this is not a problem. The Zojirushi NS-VGC05 will automatically switch over from cooking to the keep warm mode this will ensure that the rice is not over cooked but at the same time ready to eat when you are. It is also possible to put the rice and water in the Zojirushi NS-VGC05 in the morning and program a finish cooking time and leave it.

When you return home in the evening the rice will be all cooked to perfection just waiting for you to eat. Note; in hotter weather it is recommended that the timer is not set for more than 13 hours as the warmer weather may cause the rice to soak up too much water and become over cooked. In addition to cooking standard short grain rice, the Zojirushi NS-VGC05 also has programs for cooking sushi rice (the rice is left a little firmer to allow for extra handling when preparing the sushi dishes), quick cook rice, and porridge rice and there is even a setting to bake cakes.

In the manual that accompanies the Zojirushi NS-VGC05 there are recipes for a sponge cake and a cheese cake cooked in the Zojirushi NS-VGC05. When measuring the rice and water out it is important to use the cup that comes with the Zojirushi NS-VGC05. This ensures that the correct amounts and ratios are used to enable the rice cooker to perfectly cook the rice.

With the Zojirushi NS-VGC05 unfortunately the cooking bowl and the inner lid are not dish washer friendly and need to be cleaned with a sponge and mild detergent. One program that is missing from the Zojirushi NS-VGC05 is a brown rice setting.

Brown rice can be cooked in this rice cooker but it does need some trials to get the final texture right. One feature that is particularly useful, especially if the Zojirushi NS-VGC05 is unplugged and put away after use is that the clock is not dependent on the unit be plugged in to the mains. It has a lithium battery which will keep the clock working independent of power for about 5 years.

Our Final Conclusion For The Zojirushi NS-VGC05

The Zojirushi NS-VGC05 is a very useful smaller rice cooker. The fact that it  can cook from as little as ½ cup of uncooked rice up to 3 cups uncooked rice makes it ideal for singles, couples and small families. The space saving size is great for when space is at a premium and the power cord which detaches can be placed in the cooking pot to save have it hanging and getting caught.

Reading through the accompanying instructions and looking at other users comments it seems that the cooking bowl non-stick surface is not particularly durable. The coating can start to come off after prolonged use. The coating is non-toxic and will do you no harm and the cooking bowl can continue to be used without the non-stick coating without any problems with the way the rice is cooked.

On the whole the Zojirushi NS-VGC05 is a very useful smaller rice cooker that does it job of cooking rice as well as any larger model does but at a fraction of the price of its larger siblings. If space is at a premium or if you only need to cook smaller quantities of rice the Zojirushi NS-VGC05 is an ideal option to consider. Users are very happy with their Zojirushi NS-VGC05 and give it a 4.5 out of 5 rating.
