Zojirushi NS-TSC10 Introduction

There are hundreds of different brands and sorts of rice and all of them seem to need different cooking times and amounts of water etc. to achieve the best results. It seems that most rice goes from not being quite done and a little hard to overdone and a bit of a soft mass in the blink of an eye. How much easier it is then to be able to use just a standard rice put it and some water in a cooker press a button and when it bleeps it is cooked to perfection.

The Zojirushi NS-TSC10 is just such a kitchen appliance. It will not only cook just standard long grain rice but a whole selection of different types. It has a single button to select they type of rice including white/sushi, mixed white and brown, rice porridge, sweet rice and brown rice. In addition it will also steam vegetables and sea food and there is even a setting to cook cakes. It does all this by using what is called fuzzy logic – sensors detect what is being cooked and adjust the settings accordingly.

A programmable timer allows you to delay the start of the cooking and set the cooker to have the rice cooked when you want it. It also incorporates an automatic keep warm and re-heat function. The Zojirushi NS-TSC10 has a large capacity, cooking 5 ½ cups of uncooked rice, which produces a large 10 cup cooked rice result.

After use the Zojirushi NS-TSC10 has a retractable power cord to make storage easier – no hanging cables to get caught up in other things as you are trying to move it. The Zojirushi NS-TSC10 has a thick inner cooking bowl so that even when full it will ensure that all the contents are cooked thoroughly and evenly.

Our Zojirushi NS-TSC10 Review

Many people are a little skeptical as to how the Zojirushi NS-TSC10 can cook perfect rice every time. After a few times of using this rice cooker they are won over. It cooks excellent rice all the time. Considering the capacity, 10 cups of cooked rice, of the Zojirushi NS-TSC10, it is quite a compact example of a rice cooker. It measures only 10.1 x 8.5 x 14 inches and weighs in at a little over 9 lbs. There are lighter rice cookers available, but they save weight by not having quite as thick a cooking bowl which sometimes means that, when cooking a larger volume of rice that the rice is not cooked evenly throughout.

One element that may cause a little confusion when first using the Zojirushi NS-TSC10 is that, due to the fuzzy logic used by the machine that the timer may alter when cooking. This is not a fault is the Zojirushi NS-TSC10 constantly monitoring the cooking progress and adjusting the time accordingly. This should not be a concern as the cooker will switch to keep warm mode when the cooking is complete so the rice will still be ready to eat when you are ready for it. To use the Zojirushi NS-TSC10 is simplicity itself, simply measure the amount of rice that is wanted using the included measuring cup. Then, using the same cup add the indicated amount of water for the amount of rice that you are cooking and also the type.

There are different markings on the measuring cup indicating rice types as each type requires different amount of water. Then press the appropriate button for the type of rice and that is it. It is important to select the type of rice that is being cooked as the Zojirushi NS-TSC10 alters it settings accordingly, for example when brown rice is cooked it is cooked at a lower temperature to ensure that it is completely cooked without becoming too mushy.

The Zojirushi NS-TSC10 also is adaptable as a large capacity steamer. This allows you to steam larger foods that often will not fit in standard electrical steamers, items such as artichokes will easily fit in the Zojirushi NS-TSC10 when in steaming mode. There is also a cake baking mode available, but whether many users will find this particularly useful is debatable.

Another feature that is there, seemingly more because it adds another feature more than it serves any particularly useful additional function, is the ability to change the notification sound when the cooker has finished. If someone is at a loose end one day it may provide a little distraction playing with the sounds. These are minor points and do not in any way detract from the Zojirushi NS-TSC10’s ability to cook perfect rice every time.

A small feature which, until you use it, does not seem particularly special is the carrying handle. This means that you can carry the Zojirushi NS-TSC10 with one hand rather than need 2 hands to lift and move. The Zojirushi NS-TSC10 is finished in a coated stainless steel with a black trim, and with its sleek design the Zojirushi NS-TSC10 will fit in with all kitchen decors.

Zojirushi NS-TSC10 Specifications & Pros/Cons

Pros

Cons

Key Features

  • The carrying handle a simple innovation, but one that we absolutely love. While not many people carry their rice cookers around them – it does make it portable and that’s important sometimes.
  • The stainless steel trim makes the Zojirushi NS-TSC10 quite appealing to look at.
  • The large capacity is especially useful for when you’re cooking large batches of rice in one go.
  • The sounds can get quite annoying, but we’re sure there must be a way to turn them off.
  • Automatic rice cooking – this is undoubtedly the best feature of the Zojirushi NS-TSC10. The ability to just be able to select the rice type add the rice and water and press start and know that the end result will be perfect fluffy rice every time.
  • Keep warm function – this feature is doubly useful. Firstly, as the cooker adjusts it’s time throughout the cooking cycle to make sure the rice is cooked to perfection, it will switch over to keep warm setting to make sure that even if the rice is cooked earlier than originally expected it will remain hot without being over cooked until you are ready to eat it. Secondly if your meal is delayed or a buffet style meal is being offered, the rice will stay hot.
  • Reheat function – as this rice cooker has a large capacity, some may prefer to cook a large batch in one go and then use it when needed. The reheating option allows the rice to be reheated and still remain cooked correctly – no over cooking.
  • Heavy duty cooking bowl – this allows, no matter how much rice is being cooked, an even heat distribution throughout meaning that the rice is cooked evenly.
  • Integral cord storage – means that there are no trailing cords to get caught whenmoving or storing the Zojirushi NS-TSC10
