Presto 01781 Introduction

The Presto 01781 Pressure Cooker and Canner isn’t just large in capacity but also made from heavy-duty aluminum for a prolonged life. It comes with solid locking steel lids, stay-cool handles and a professional overall build. To help can, this cooker comes with a rack that helps keep jars off the bottom so liquids can easily circulate underneath.

If you ever feel the need to own a large pressure cooker that meets USDA requirements for canning, then this is the model to get. It retains pressure and steam inside by using inner sealing rings and a sturdy lid lock mechanism. The end result is consistent high pressures with accurate readings. To get you started, this pressure cooker ships with an instruction manual containing nearly 50 recipes – some easy like soup and others more complicated like pot roasts. The manual even discusses tenderizing meat. As for cleaning the pressure cooker, it washes off easily by hand but the use of nonabrasive cleaners is prescribed by presto. Just remember not to immerse the lid and to remove the inner seal. Presto provides an exclusive extended 12-year warranty on this model.

Our Presto 01781 Review

There is not much to actually say other than the fact that the Presto 01781 does what it was designed for. As a canner, it seals just fine and retains pressure without losing any of it. Unlike weighted gauge canners, this one is a dial gauge canner so you have to be a bit careful in estimating the heat required. However, with a little practice it is easy to get acquainted with this pressure canner. The Presto 01781 pressure cooker and canner costs almost the same as an All American canner but unlike its heavier competitor, this model can be used on a glass top oven.

Good news for first timers is that the instruction booklet is rather detailed. From usage, recipes to care instructions, there is everything you need to get started. If you are afraid of all the horror stories you heard on pressure cooking, this is the canner to get because even the USDA has certified it safe for use. So long as you follow the use instructions, take care of it, this pressure cooker should do nothing more than cook and can. In fact, many online canning experts recommend this specific model, using it in their own tutorials and classes.

A word of caution, Presto recommends that you take your brand new pressure cooker for a pressure gauge check to any of its authorized county extension services. However, if you do not have one nearby you can contact Presto and they will guide you through the procedure.

As for the construction, it is heavy duty in all regards. The dial, gauge, pressure release valve and even the overall design are well thought out. Heavy-duty aluminum does not lose its shine and while it is prone to easily scratching, the good news is that it heats up evenly. Beware though, this pressure cooker cannot be cleaned in a dishwasher. It is best to wash it by hand and use a mild detergent at best. Remember not to immerse the lid in water either. As for the gasket, if you don’t have any plans to use it in a few days, then remember to oil it before storage. Something that disappointed us a little was the included rack. While it does a decent job of helping water circulate under the cans, it tends to chip paint under pressure. This is starting to show with a blackish patch work at the bottom. Unfortunately, we were unable to remove this accumulation and the only possible source had to be the rack.
