Instant Pot IP-LUX60 Introduction

If your idea of a pressure cooker is an aluminum pot that you had to put the lid on at an angle to the base, then twist the lid until the handles lined up. Put a little weight on the top of the lid then wait for a while, all the time steam was ejected from the area of the weight every now and then. When the cooking time was done, this weight was lifted off and some pressurized steam escaped before you could open the lid. Think again, many of today’s pressure cookers have virtually no resemblance to the old type of pressure cookers, save that they use pressure to speed up the cooking time.

Although there are still many of the original type of pressure cooker available many of today’s pressure cookers, like the Instant Pot IP-LUX60 are electric and combine pressure cooking with the ability to cook using other methods as well. The 6 quart capacity Instant Pot IP-LUX60 is called a 6 in 1 cooker because of the number of cooking options that it offers. In addition to the pressure cooking function the Instant Pot IP-LUX60 also sautés and browns, works as a slow cooker, a rice cooker, a steamer and a food warmer.

It does not have to go on the stove top either, it is electric. There are a range of programs to vary the cooking method, the time to cook, the start cooking time, which can be delayed for up to 24 hours, and an automatic warming function that will keep your food hot until you are ready to eat it. Just because the Instant Pot IP-LUX60 has all these functions does not mean that is compromises on any of them, in fact the Instant Pot IP-LUX60 pressure cooker is also one of the top selling rice cookers as well.

Our Instant Pot IP-LUX60 Review

You have to wonder why this is just called a pressure cooker. Pressure cooking is only one of its 6 cooking functions. The Instant Pot IP-LUX60 6-in-1 Programmable Pressure Cooker, 6-Quart 1000-Watt is a highly versatile cooker that can perform the functions of other kitchen appliances and preform them very well. There are so many possibilities with the Instant Pot IP-LUX60 that it is impossible to cover them all here.

There is no loss of performance because it is 6 cooking systems all combined in to one appliance. The key to the versatility and efficiency of this 6 quart cooker is the control system, the 1000 watt heating element and the material of the cooking pot. The cooking pot is made of 3 ply stainless steel which allows it to heat high enough to provide quick pressure or to sauté or brown and the conduction means that the heat needed to evenly cook rice and act as a slow cooker is delivered all over. Instant Pot IP-LUX60.

There are a number of safety features built in to the pressure cooking option. These include an interlock that prevents the cooker from being opened while it is under pressure. A sensor detects that the lid is closed correctly before starting to cook and an automatic pressure controller ensures that the pressure is always within safe limits. The temperature is monitored and controlled to ensure that the type of food that is being cooked is not over-heated. While fuses provide safety backup if the temperature or electrical current being drawn are too high.

The easy to read programming panel is where all the settings are made. There are 10 preset cooking programs to adapt the cooker in to the 6 different modes. A setting for meat or stews, a soup setting, one for poultry, a bean or chili program, one for steaming and 3 for different types of rice, congee, multigrain or standard white rice and a final program for slow cooking. Added to these 10 programs are a selection of heat setting for sautéing and browning and a further 3 for slow cooking.

By cooking with the Instant Pot IP-LUX60 in the pressure cooker mode it is possible to reduce the cooking time by up to 70% and the electricity being used also by 70%. It is possible to set a delayed start for up to 24 hours and a manual setting cooking time of up to 120 minutes. When the cooking times are completed the Instant Pot IP-LUX60 automatically switches over to the warming mode to keep the food hot without over cooking it. The long delayed start is particularly useful for those who are not allowed to cook on certain days due to religious obligations. The warming time can be set for a maximum of 10 hours.

A very useful little suggestion in the accompanying handbook is using a test run procedure before you do any actual cooking. This quick run through makes sure that the pressure cooker is working correctly while at the same time familiarizing you with the relevant part and how to use them.

Our Final Conclusion For The Instant Pot IP-LUX60

Pressure cookers have certainly come a long way and not many can say that have come as far as the Instant Pot IP-LUX60. It changes the pressure cooker for many from an occasionally used pot which was awkward and cumbersome to use in to an everyday kitchen appliance. The pressure cooker can reduce cooking times by as much as 70% of conventionally cooked for while at the same time using as much as 70% less energy, which greatly reduces costs.

The versatility that it has in cooking in so many modes is amazing. Not only does it cook in the different settings it also performs very well. So much so that the Instant Pot IP-LUX60 is one of the top selling cookers in the rice cooking category as well as in the pressure cookers. It can’t be classed as a substitute for a slow cooker, a rice cooker or a sauté and browning pan – it is a direct replacement for all these separate kitchen appliances.

The 24 hour delay on the start of cooking combined with the 10 hour automatic switch over to the keep warm setting is a very useful option, especially for those who cannot cook on certain days of the week. On Amazon this scores a highly creditable 4.6 out of 4 from over 1400 users, of whom 80% rate it as being very good.
