Breville JE98XL Review

Breville JE98XL Summary

4.2 out of 5

The Breville JE98XL isn’t the best Juicer available on the market, but it is quite successful at extracting the maximum amount of juice. In our initial tests, we found that the Breville JE98XL lacked power compared to other models, and just didn’t see to be as quick as we would of liked – although it’s still a firm favorite of ours.

Breville JE98XL Introduction

Many years ago when we wanted juice the only option was to make it by hand. This was very labor intensive and time consuming and we were restricted in what is was that we could actually juice. The only alternative was to buy commercially made juice, which was mainly orange. With the introduction of powered juicers a whole new world opened up with regard to the types of fruits and vegetables that we could extract juice from at home. The most common type of home juice extractor in use today is the centrifugal or rotary juice extractor. The most popular of the centrifugal juice extractors on Amazon is the Breville JE98XL.

An ongoing problem with high speed centrifugal juicers is that as they spin at very high speeds, as much as 16,500 RPM, they create heat. This heat destroys many of the nutrients, vitamins and enzymes that are much of the healthy goodness contained in the fruit or vegetables. With the Breville JE98XL the Nutri Disc and patented juice extraction system this minimizes this heat build up to allow the maximum juice extraction with minimal damage to the nutrients, enzymes and vitamins. So the juice you get is of a healthier quality that with some other high speed extraction juicers.

Additionally the Breville JE98XL has a choice of speeds to deal with both harder and soft fruits and leafy vegetables more effectively. The Breville JE98XL has an extra wide feed tube that will allow for the juicing of fruits or vegetables the size of apples to be juiced without having to be chopped up first. When this is combined with the very powerful 850 watt motor, fruits with very hard skins can be fed in chunks without the need to remove the tough skin first. Just in case you should try to put too much in to the Breville JE98XL at any one time there is a safety overload protection for the machine.

Our Breville JE98XL Review

The Breville JE98XL is an upright high speed centrifugal juicer that measures 13.2 inches x 16.5 inches and is 18.2 inches high. It weighs a little under 13 lbs. Breville consider that the JE98XL is an entry level juicer but, despite them designating and marketing it as such, it is a very capable, abundantly featured all round juicer. It comes with a 2 speed control, 6,500 RPM and 12,000 RPM.

The slower of the speeds is for hard fruits and vegetables like apples and beetroots while the higher of the speeds is ideal for softer fruits or leafy vegetables like cantaloupe and spinach. One of the key components to the Breville JE98XL efficiency is the Nutri Disc combined with the patented juice extraction system. One of the big selling points for the slow speed masticating juicers has always been that the slower speeds mean no heat buildup which destroys much of the goodness in the fruit and vegetable juices. The Breville JE98XL overcomes that objection by increasing the temperature of the juice by less than 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a reasonably large size juice extractor mainly for two reasons.

The powerful 850 watt motor requires room and the capacity of the Breville JE98XL to process quite large sized fruits and vegetables without the need to chop them in to smaller pieces before juicing. The feed tube is actually 3 inches in diameter, much larger than many juicers. The feed tube is centrally located on the top of the juicer this, due to the centrifugal forces involved, helps maximize the amount of juice that can be extracted from the fruits and vegetables.

The higher centrifugal forces involved also force the juice pass through the stainless steel mesh filter basket. The mesh basket retains the pulp for ejection. The Breville JE98XL has an automatic pulp ejection system and, in addition to a jug to collect the juice, there is a contoured container to collect the waste pulp. The contouring allows the container to fit closely against the body of the juices to avoid and spills or drips. An issue with high speed juice extraction has always been the frothing that occurs.

The 1 liter juice jug (about 34 fl. oz.) has a foam filter to make sure that the juice you get is foam free. For safety there is an interlock lever that prevents the Breville JE98XL from operating without the lid correctly in place. The Breville JE98XL has the capacity to process quite a large quantity of juice in one session, however, in case of a jam or running too long there is an overload sensor that will stop the machine before it gets to the stage where excessive heat may cause some damage.

All the plastic parts that come in to contact with any food or juice are made with BPA free plastic. After use all the parts of the Breville JE98XL apart from the mesh filter basket, the Nutri Disc and the food pusher, can be cleaned up in the dish washer.

Our Final Conclusion For The Breville JE98XL

Despite the Breville JE98XL being billed as Breville’s entry level juicer it is a very competent juicer and has a great deal to recommend it. The patented Nutri Disc and juice extraction system is found on other Breville juicers, although on the more expensive ones the disc is titanium and not stainless steel as it is on this model.

The large feed tube does save time and a lot of stopping and starting or preparatory work when juicing in large quantities. One of the main arguments against high speed centrifugal juicers – the heat buildup destroying nutrients, enzymes and vitamins has been overcome with the Breville JE98XL. A secondary issue of foaming causing oxidization and reducing the storage has not however. The foam is trapped in a mesh but it still affects the juice. While slow speed masticating juicers are more efficient at extracting juice from fruit and vegetables than centrifugal juicers such as the Breville JE98XL, they are generally more expensive.

It can be a often become a choice between spending more on the juicer and having more juice extracted, or paying less for the juicer and paying more for the fruit and vegetables used to make the same amount of juice. That being said the Breville JE98XL is the top selling centrifugal juicer on Amazon and is liked by its users.
