Char Siu Pork Roast Recipe

In this recipe, we’re going to be looking at one of our all-time favorite recipes. Whilst unknown to many avid chefs and cookers around the country, we are determined to bring the home-made delicacy of Char Siu Pork Roast to American homes all over the country. For those of you who aren’t aware, Char Siu effectively refers to barbecue (BBQ) flavored chicken, in a Chinese sense. We use the slow cooker here to prepare and cook the chicken, to allow for an extra tender and juicy batch of food. If we were to cook the chicken using a conventional oven, you would find the chicken to be rather hard.

As an added bonus to the recipe, we’re going to be adding in long-grain white rice with the help of a rice cooker. If you don’t have a rice cooker, then simply cook rice using a hob over the oven. For extras and to further spice up the flavor of the dish, we’ll be adding in some bell peppers, snow peas, baby corn, water chestnuts and carrots. You can also add seasonings and flavors as per your requirements and individual taste.

Char Siu Pork Roast Ingredients

For this fantastic and delicious recipe, you will need to get your hands on the following items:

  • 1/4 cup of low sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup worth of hoisin sauce
  • between 2 and 4 tablespoons of tomato ketchup
  • between 2 and 4 tablespoons of honey
  • roughly 2 teaspoons of minced garlic
  • roughly 2 teaspoons of grated and peeled freshly cut ginger
  • sesame oil (roughly 1 tablespoons worth)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of five-spice powder
  • a perfectly cut and delicious boneless pork shoulder that has been trimmed
  • 1/2 a cup, or a full cup of chicken broth (as per your fancy)

Char Siu Pork Roast Preparation And Cooking

First of all, combine the first 8 listed ingredients above into a small bowl. Once these have been thrown in, simply stir them well with a whisk or a similar appliance. From there, add your trimmed pork to a seal able bag and throw in your first 8 ingredients into the bag. Proceed to marinate your “bag of deliciousness” in the fridge for at least two-hours, whilst taking care to turn the bag over throughout the process.

Once you’re happy with the 2-hour marinating process, proceed to place the pork and the ingredients into your slow cooker. Cover your cooker and proceed to cook the meal on low for a total of 8-hours.

Once the cooking time has elapsed, remove the pork from the cooker by using a spoon (slotted spoon preferred). Place the pork onto a cutting board, and cover with aluminium foil. Keep the pork warm as you don’t want it going cold.

Proceed to add broth to sauce inside the slow cooker. Cover your cooker and proceed to cook on low for a total of 30-minutes, or until the sauce has reached your desired thickness. Shred the pork by using forks and serve with sauce.

Add any other ingredients as per necessary, such as Pasta. Experiment away and develop a meal that the whole family LOVES!
